Who is Mountain City Soccer Club?
Have you noticed a flash of "Carolina" blue speeding around the soccer fields at Roper Park? Then most likely, you have just witnessed members of the new soccer club in Pickens County. The name of that new club is called Mountain City Soccer Club and it was started in the summer of 2011 with the purpose of promoting and advancing the sport of soccer for the youth in Pickens County. It was started by a small group of soccer parents with the intent to get our kids playing other teams outside of Pickens County and show them the talent we have in our area. It is solely a parent run organization that operates in conjunction with Pickens County Parks & Recreation Department and Georgia Soccer. We plan on keeping it a "grassroots", parent run club so we can keep cost down and stay in control of how we want it operated.
Presently, Mountain City Soccer Club provides competitive soccer for kids as young as 4 up to the age of 19. Although we play many games at our home base of Roper Park, many games are played away against Atlanta/Marietta teams and others from our surrounding area. It is competitive, traveling soccer so a team might have to travel up to an hour and half to play a game. It is well worth it because we are playing tough competition outside of our area and gives us a measuring stick on where we are and the direction we need to go. The younger 4 to 6 year olds strictly play a home, in-house schedule, but the 7 & 8 year olds may play with some of our surrounding county teams like Gilmer County or Cherokee Impact.
The age groups are divided into Under 6's, Under 8's, Under 10's, Under 12's, Under 14's & Under 19's. The coaches of these teams are all volunteer and many are parents of some of our players. All of our coaches are certified by he Georgia Soccer Association so they have to have a good understanding of soccer and know how to relay what they know to the kids.
The games are mainly played on the weekends, but occasionally, there might be a game during the week. Most of the weekdays are filled with the different teams practice times. The younger ones might only practice once a week, while the older traveling teams usually practice two or three times a week.
The future for Pickens County soccer is very bright. Getting the kids interested and experienced in playing the competitive, traveling soccer at a young age should payoff as time goes on. Keep an eye on dominating soccer teams materializing out of Pickens County in the near future! Come out and support and be a part of the Mighty "Carolina" Blue of Mountain City Soccer!
